Palermo Airport: How automation is Transforming Border Control

Palermo's "Falcone e Borsellino" Airport faces significant daily challenges in managing passenger flows, particularly at international arrivals.

During peak periods, over one thousand passengers can pass through in less than an hour, creating risks of overcrowding in the arrivals area, operational difficulties for the Air Border Police, and long waiting times for travellers.

With peaks reaching up to 35,000 passengers per day, the need was clear: to improve flow management capacity while maintaining high security standards — without altering the existing spatial configuration.

The traditional process, relying on manual checks and separate verification stages, was prone to congestion and delays, making it essential to find a solution that could increase processing capacity without structural modifications to the arrivals hall.

To address this challenge, GESAP — the airport's management company — launched a technological innovation project aimed at automating part of the border control process, entrusting FAAC with the role of implementing the solutions.

ABC EasyGate: Greater Efficiency in Border Control

The project involved the installation of 6 ABC EasyGate automated border control gates, developed through the integration of Magnetic® access technology and Secunet biometric software.

The solution automates the traveller identity verification process through electronic document checks and facial biometric recognition.

The passenger presents their electronic passport at the gate entrance; the system automatically verifies the document data and compares the facial image captured in real time with the one stored on the electronic chip. If the match is successful, passage is authorised within seconds.

The entire system is integrated with dedicated ministerial platforms for electronic document verification and supports Polaria operations in flow monitoring and exception handling.

One of the most significant aspects of the solution is its operational continuity: the system architecture allows the identification process for the next passenger to begin while the previous one is still completing their transit, helping to maintain a high throughput rate. Magnetic's automated border control solutions are specifically designed to deliver high levels of efficiency and security in airport environments.

The introduction of the ABC EasyGate gates has delivered tangible benefits for both operators and travellers:

  • Reduced control times: for a flight carrying 200 passengers, average processing times decreased from 40–50 minutes to approximately 20–30 minutes;
  • Smoother flow: the simultaneous processing of multiple passengers reduces waiting times and congestion;
  • Optimised use of space: the arrivals hall is cleared more quickly, without the need for structural expansions, and passengers no longer have to wait in non-climate-controlled outdoor areas;
  • Enhanced security: overhead cameras and anti-tailgating systems enable Polaria to monitor anomalies in real time.
